IIn 1791, Louis Joseph Gaspard Lacoste de Maniban, Marquis d'Estournel, inherited at the age of 29 the family property located in the southern part of Saint-Est・・phe, at a place called Cos, a word of Gascon origin meaning "hill of pebbles ?, he bought many neighboring plots allowing him to develop Cos considerably and giving it about its size today. In 1852, he owned three crus: Cos d'Estournel, Cos Labory and Pomys. From the 1830s, he built one of the most extraordinary cellars in the M・・doc, surmounted by Chinese pagodas and equipped with a carved door specially from India.

The Marquis was indeed a great connoisseur of the East with which he traded. He had discovered in particular the benefit that his precious bottles could derive from a round trip by sea from India, bottles then known as "Return from India".
